Paris, Ernest Flammarion, January 1901; in-12, [6]-314 pp. bound in contemporary midnight blue polished half-chagrin with corners, gilt fillet, spine ribbed with gilt fillet, entirely untrimmed. Proof copy of the first edition, extensively corrected and crossed out by the author in violet ink, with stamp of the Imprimerie de Lagny: 11 January 01, 2nd proof. Gyp has written on the first page of the text: Bon à tirer, keeping a close eye on the final corrections and correcting nothing - except typographical errors - even if something seems wrong with the punctuation or the lack of capitals. Please do not change anything. Gyp. Good for printing, paying particular attention to the corrections signed Gyp. On the title page the author has crossed out the word Roman and notes: "Why Roman? We don't put that on any more books". On the false title, the printer's notes on the print run: 11,000 copies - 24 copies in Japan - prints.
