Provenance : Former Napoleonic collection of the Palais Princier de Monaco (3rd sale, lot 165). A chased silver axe Commentary: Vermeil boarding axes were created by decree of 21 Thermidor IX (9 August 1801) and thus completed the system of weapons of honour instituted at the end of 1799 for the navy. Boarding axes are the rarest weapons of honour.
