Accordion diorama, approximately 15 x 20 cm, unfolded length approximately 45 cm. Folding optical view including five sets and a façade, obviously inspired by Albert Smith's productions.
A very rare and beautiful artistic representation of the glaciers of Mont Blanc.
Élie Haguenthal (1822 - 1881) studied drawing in Metz and, after a spell in Paris, founded the Lithographie Artistique de la Lorraine in 1850, which employed up to 160 workers and produced a thousand lithographic plates a year. "As well as producing prints, his lithographs illustrated children's books (Histoire de Jean-Jean le conscrit, 1855), and adorned fantasy card games, colouring sheets and all kinds of games. Very early on, he began producing cut-out boards (Constructomanie artistique et pittoresque, 1863) that enabled him to construct three-dimensional monuments and fold-out perspective views (Diorama d'une chasse impériale, de Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, de Constantinople, etc.).He regularly won awards at the Metz exhibitions of industrial products (Honourable Mention in 1855, medals in 1857 and 1860, silver medal in 1861 and gold medal in 1862)" (Dictionnaire des Imprimeurs-Lithographes du XIXe siècle).
