HALF-HEIGHT CABINET “AUX ESPAGNOLETTES” Louis XV style, Paris, late 19th century. Signed on the back Millet (Maison Millet, active 1853–ca. 1905). The bronzes monogrammed ZS. Purpleheart, tulipwood and cross-grained wood, partly in veneer, inlaid in reserves with cube and lozenge marquetry and with a flower bouquet. Trapezoidal body, distinctively curved and rounded on three sides, on a cut-out frame and slightly curved legs with sabots. Cornice with pink-colored, shaped marble leaf (later). Single-door front between strikingly curved corner studs. Rich bronze decoration in the form of individualized espagnolettes, rocailles, scrolls, decorative friezes, fillets, palmettes and tendrils. 1 key. Signed on the back, numbered 35283 (difficult to read) and marked Galerie Drouot in white chalk. 137 × 57 × 124 cm. In good restored condition, the bronze fittings cleaned. Some bronze fittings with cracks. The Millet company was founded in 1853 by Blaise Millet and successfully continued by his son Théodore Blaise from 1878. The importance of this furniture company can be seen not only from the number of employees (around 1900, there were 150), but also from the wide range of high-quality products. The company specialized in the production of Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture copies after famous models. At its debut at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris, Millet won the gold medal. At the zenith of its success, the company secured the reproduction rights from the Palace of Versailles in 1902, to copy Marie-Antoinette's famous “Grand cabinet à bijoux”. Interestingly, Millet furniture displays a similarity to the work of François Linke, which can be attributed to the fact that the latter worked for Millet in the 1890s. It was also Linke who bought up some of Millet's precious pieces at Paris auctions in 1905 and 1906, when the Millet company was being dissolved (see Christopher Payne et al.: Paris Furniture, The Luxury Market of the 19th Century. Saint-Rémy-en-l'Eau 2018, pp. 469-474). The signed piece of furniture “à hauteur d'appui”, on offer in this auction, shows parallels to an example sold at Sotheby's (see Sotheby's New York, November 16, 2011, lot 308). Passig eingezogener, gekehlter Kranz mit rosafarbenem moulüriertem Marmorblatt (später). Eintürige Front zwischen markant geschweiften Eckstollen. Reicher Bronzedekor in Form von individualisierten Espagnoletten, Rocaillen, Voluten, Zierfriesen, Filets, Palmetten und Rankenwerk. 1 Schlüssel. Rückseitig signiert, schwer leserlich nummeriert 35283 sowie mit weisser Kreide bezeichnet Galerie Drouot. 137 × 57 × 124 cm. Guter restauriert Zustand, die Bronzebeschläge gereinigt. Einige Bronzeapplizierungen mit Rissen. Die Firma Millet wurde 1853 von Blaise Millet gegründet und 1878 von seinem Sohn Théodore Blaise mit Erfolg weitergeführt. Die Wichtigkeit dieser Möbelfirma lässt sich nicht nur anhand der Anzahl Mitarbeitende (um 1900 waren es 150), sondern auch an der breiten Palette an hochwertigen Produkten ablesen. Die Firma war spezialisiert auf die Herstellung von Louis XV und Louis XVI Möbelkopien nach berühmten Vorbildern. Bei ihrem Weltausstellungsdebüt 1889 in Paris gewann Millet gleich die Goldmedaille. Auf dem Zenit ihres Erfolges sicherte sich die Firma 1902 das Reproduktionsrecht vom Palais de Versailles, um das berühmte "Grand cabinet à bijoux" von Marie-Antoinette nachzubauen. Interessanterweise weisen Möbel der Firma Millet eine Nähe zu François Linkes Werk auf, was darauf zurückzuführen ist, dass letzterer in den 1890er Jahren für die Firma Millet tätig war. Es war auch Linke, der 1905 und 1906 einige Preziosen von Millet auf Pariser Auktionen aufkaufte, als die Firma Millet aufgelöst wurde (Vgl. Christopher Payne et al.: Paris Furniture, The Luxury Market of the 19th Century. Saint-Rémy-en-l’Eau 2018, S. 469-474). Das vorliegende signierte Möbel "à hauteur d’appui" zeigt Parallelen zu einem bei Sotheby’s versteigerten Exemplar (Vgl. Sotheby’s New York, 16. November 2011, Lot 308). Charakteristisch bei diesem Halbschrank sind die individuell gestalteten vergoldeten Bronzebeschläge in Form von Menschenköpfen. Dieses mit * (Asterisk) bezeichnete Objekte ist vollumfänglich mehrwertsteuerpflichtig, d. h. bei diesen Objekten wird die MWST auf den Zuschlagspreis plus Aufgeld berechnet. Käufer, die eine rechtsgültig abgestempelte Ausfuhrdeklaration vorlegen, erhalten die MWST rückvergütet.
