"HALLOT (François de Montmorency du), lieutenant-general of Henri IV in Normandy, brave and valiant lord, was murdered treacherously and in cold blood in his house in Vernon, on 13 Sept. 1592, by the Marquis d'Alègre, baron de St-Just, governor of Gisors. Following this murder, d'Alègre withdrew to the Duke of Mayenne, and managed to avoid the punishment due to his crime." Frère (II, 61.)
