Lot no. 1799
Hans am Ende. (1864 Trier - 1918 Stettin) Rocky mountainside with larches in the snow Impressionist landscape painted by the artist around 1900-1910 with a virtuoso loose style, whose dynamic diagonals in the mountainside and the rocks are captured by the calm square format. After studying painting, Hans am Ende came to Worpswede in 1889, where he founded the artists' colony with Fritz Mackensen and Otto Modersohn, who were joined by Fritz Overbeck and Heinrich Vogeler in 1894. In 1895, their successful exhibitions of Worpswede works at the Bremen Kunsthalle and the Munich Glaspalast made him instantly famous. The Barbizon School and the French Impressionists, whom he had become acquainted with during several trips to Paris since 1889, had a formative influence on his art. Worpswede and the surrounding landscape of the Devil's Moor became the main motifs of his oeuvre. After a longer stay in the Harz Mountains in 1900 and a trip to Switzerland, Hans also devoted himself to the raw nature of winter mountain landscapes, where he often depicted the light effects of snow in contrast to dark rocks and larches. Oil on canvas; signed l. and r.; 75 cm x 75 cm. Frame. Oil on canvas. Signed.
