Lot no. 1701
Hans Hartig (1873 Carvin - 1936 Berlin) "Storm surge on Sylt, 6 November 1911" (or "The 6th of November"). Original title Large-format, impressionistic, rediscovered major work by Hartig from his "Storm Surge" cycle, completed in 1912. Hartig, a master student of Eugen Bracht, made his debut at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1901 and also exhibited at the "Berliner Secession" from 1906. In 1911, Hartig travelled to Sylt to study the North German landscape and the rough sea. However, on the planned day of departure, 6 November 1911, he was surprised by a catastrophic storm surge. Hartig processed this experience of unbridled natural force in a three-part cycle of paintings, which he showed at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1912. Apart from the final painting in the cycle - "Am andern Morgen" (acquired by the Berlin National Gallery, inv. no. A II 27), the whereabouts of the other two compositions in the cycle - "Sturmwarnung (Vorabend)" and "Der 6. November" - were previously unknown. The present painting is therefore at the centre of the cycle. It depicts the storm-ravaged, flooded island of Sylt in a fast, broad, impasto style, while in the foreground a group of courageous men set off on a rescue operation by boat from a hill with a windmill. Oil on canvas; signed and dated on the reverse. Verso titled and inscribed by the artist "Hans Hartig Ber(...)", label of the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung 1912, further handwritten information on the depiction. 120.5 cm x 180 cm. A smaller version from the same year (1912) is in the Sylt Museum (Söllring Museen) and was exhibited in 2023. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1912. Titled and inscribed by the artist on the reverse, original label of the Grosse Berliner Kunstausstellung 1912.
