Hans Hartung (1904-1989), "T1972 - H17", 26 December 1972, acrylic on canvas, signed and dated 72, 81x100 cm This work is listed in the archives of the Hartung Bergman Foundation and will be included in the artist's catalogue raisonné in preparation. Provenance: Maeght Gallery, Zurich, 1973, Acquired from the Semiha Huber Gallery in Zurich on 27 June 1988 by the present owner. Exhibition: Hans Hartung, Recent Paintings, Maeght Gallery, Zürich, 1973 Bibliography: Peter Althaus, Hartung, Werner Rusche, Cologne, 1973 The work entitled T1972-H17 does not have a traditional title but a temporal data like all the paintings in his production, in order to give no limit to the viewer's perception. It was in the 1970s, at the height of his international recognition that Hartung began to paint his last and most experimental works. In constant renewal, he makes or modifies tools such as vine sprayers, rakes and rubber whips that replace the brush. After being the founding father of Lyric Abstraction, he became in this last period one of the first gestural artists of Action Painting. His palette, characteristic of the Post Pop Art period, is bright, acidic, and only reinforces the power of the visual impact and the vitality that emanates from the canvas. Hartung did not believe in automatism but wanted to bring out the emotions of the soul with control, even in the speed of gesture. "Energy is a force that can be incorporated in any form and take on any aspect".
