HANS PILHS* (Tullnerbach 1903 - 1986 Vienna) Townscape oil/canvas 47,5 x 63 cm signed H. Pilhs ESTIMATE € 250 - € 500 STARTING PRICE € 250 Hans Pilhs was an Austrian Expressionist painter who is considered part of the "lost generation" of interwar Expressionism. From 1919, Pilhs attended the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) in Vienna, under Erich Mallina and Anton von Kenner. He was discovered by the art dealer Otto Kalir-Nirenstein, who dedicated his 100th anniversary exhibition to him in 1934 at his "Neue Galerie" in Vienna. In 1938, Pilhs went on a study trip to Italy. In 1941, he was drafted into the army; in 1945, he was taken prisoner by the British. In 1954 and 1958, he travelled to Greece and Egypt. He created cycles of paintings in Tunisia in 1962, in Morocco and Spain in 1964, and in Turkey in 1966.
