HAUGHTON FORREST France, 1826 - Tasmania, 1925 Sailing ships in a storm Signed Forrest and dated 1863 lower right Oil on canvas, 89X134 cm Haughton Forrest was born in France, but at the outbreak of the 1830 Revolution he was forced to flee with his family to the island of Jersey, England. From 1858 onwards he lived between the Isle of Wight, the Isle of Man and southern England, places that profoundly marked his artistic sensibility. Here he spent long days sailing and observing the sea in all its nuances, a subject that became the heart of his painting. It is said that some of his marine works were even commissioned by the Prince of Wales. After 1881, Forrest decided to devote himself completely to art. Over the following decades, he produced a large number of paintings, ranging from small oils on panel to large canvases, all driven by a profound knowledge of the sea and light. His marinas, often set in stormy scenarios, are distinguished by the meticulous description of the vessels and the extraordinary rendering of the breakers, with crests of foam with translucent green reflections. His output, spanning almost seventy years, reveals a passionate artist, capable of capturing the power and poetry of the ocean like few others in his time.
