Heinrich Eduard Linde-Walther (1868 Lübeck - 1939 Travemünde)
Playing boy with tyre and toy horse
This sensitive portrait of a child is typical of Linde-Walther's motifs. The Impressionist studied from 1891-1894 at the Munich Academy under Gabriel von Hackl and Paul Hoecker, and from 1895-1897 in Paris at the Académie Julian. In 1900 he settled in Berlin, where he adopted the artist's name Linde-Walther. In 1901, he organised his first exhibition at the Berlin Secession. The art critic Victor Zobel wrote in the magazine "Der Kunstwart" in 1901: "In his two children's pictures, depth is combined with a very fine sense of colour". Since then, Linde-Walther exhibited regularly at the Berlin Secession and in the leading Berlin galleries; his works were reviewed and published in the most important German and international art journals. Through his brother, the art collector Dr Max Linde, he also became acquainted with Edvard Munch, who was a frequent guest of the Linde family in Lübeck from 1902 to 1907.
