Heinrich Sussmann, born in Galicia, came to Vienna in 1914; his parents fled their homeland with him after anti-Semitic pogroms. Sussmannn graduated from high school, studied in Paris in 1925/1926 and interior design and stage design at the School of Applied Arts under Oskar Strnad in 1927/1928. He worked in Vienna as a set designer and newspaper illustrator. In 1929 Sussmann went to Berlin, where he worked for Universum Film AG (UFA) as a set designer and for Ullstein-Verlag as a graphic artist and caricaturist. In 1933, as a result of the seizure of power, he fled to Vienna, where he worked as a caricaturist, commercial graphic artist and interior designer until he had to flee again after the annexation. He reached Paris via Prague and Zurich and finally went into hiding in southern France. In Marseille he met Anne Goldscheider, who came from Vienna and would later become his wife. In 1942 he joined the Resistance, on whose behalf he returned to Paris. In April 1944 he was arrested and deported to Auschwitz. Sussmann and his wife survived the Shoah and returned to Vienna in 1945. Heinrich Sussmann subsequently worked again as a painter and graphic artist, for example at the exhibitions "Never Forget!", "First Great Austrian Art Exhibition" (1947), "Vienna Builds Up" (1947) and "International Poster Exhibition" (1948). In Sussmann's work after 1945, Judaism and the confrontation with the crimes of National Socialism, especially the Shoah, occupied a central place. With the cycle "I remember Auschwitz again" (1960), he put personal impressions from Auschwitz on paper, while "Ecce Homo" (1966) deals with the Shoah in symbolic imagery. In 1968 Sussmann designed the stained glass windows of the ceremonial hall in the Jewish part of the Vienna Central Cemetery, and in 1978 the votive windows of the Austrian memorial in Auschwitz. His monument to the victims of fascism at Reumannplatz in Vienna was unveiled in 1981. Awards: Theodor Körner Prize (1962, 1965), Medal of Honuor in Silver (1979), Cross of Honour for Science and Culture (1974). His artistic legacy is on permanent loan to the Jewish Museum Vienna. In accordance with Sussmann's will, the Anni and Heinrich Sussmann Foundation, founded in 1989, supports artists who are committed to the ideals of anti-fascism and democracy. Further artists and styles: Oskar Strnad, Herbert Sandberg, Karl Farkas, caricature, satire
