Heinrich Zille (1858 Radeburg - 1929 Berlin)
On the ice rink
Depiction of a distinguished, corpulent young lady in a fur jacket and muff sitting on a bench, in front of whom a simple, bearded skating rink worker kneels and helps her put on her skates, next to her younger sister, also in a fur jacket. In a humorous, pointedly exaggerated manner, Zille depicts the everyday scene and the contrast between the social classes in the Wilhelmine imperial era at the beginning of the 20th century. The composition of the present sheet has also survived in two other drawings by Heinrich Zille. These include a drawing by his son Walter Zille entitled "Auf der Eisbahn" (On the ice rink), dated 1907 and published in the book "Heinrich Zille und sein Berlin" (Verlag Das Neue Berlin, 1949), with the accompanying text "Frieren Sie nicht Freilein?" (Aren't you freezing?) - "Oh no, mum warmed my skates". Black chalk (or charcoal)/paper. Signed lower right; sheet 24 cm x 34 cm. Frame.
