He was acquainted with C. V. Aagaard and Viggo Brandt and studied at the Academy in Copenhagen from 1918 to 1920. His teachers there were P. Rostrup and Bøyesen. Study trips took him to England, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and other European countries in the 1920s and 1930s. In particular, he travelled to France. In 1922, Helme made his debut at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition. He then exhibited regularly in Charlottenborg. He had his first solo exhibition in 1923 in a Copenhagen art gallery. In 1927, Helme received a Ronge scholarship. Helme celebrated ideal female beauty in his depictions of women. From around 1929 he ran a painting school, where Richard Mortensen studied from 1930. Helge Helme was married to the painter Karen Helme.
