Hendrick Andriessen (1607 Antwerp - 1655 Province of Zeeland) attr;
Vanitas still life
Artfully arranged vanitas objects in an old, cracked stone arched niche, including in particular a large skull and a vase with flowers standing in it. Other eye-catching symbols of transience are an unfolded pocket watch on a blue silk ribbon, an extinguished candlestick with pine shavings, a broken clay pipe together with an open paper with tobacco and, last but not least, a burning fuse. Hendrick Andriessen specialised in vanitas still lifes, but also created still lifes with smoking utensils (so-called "Toebackjes"). Recurring objects in his vanitas still lifes are skulls and pocket watches on coloured ribbons. Known comparable paintings with vanitas compositions in niches include two paintings in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent and in the museum in Wiesbaden. Oil on canvas, double; 46.5 cm x 38.5 cm. Frame.
Attributed to Hendrick Andriessen (1607 - 1655). Oil on canvas, relined.
