Lot no. 22
HENDRICK MOMMERS (Haarlem, 1620 - Amsterdam, 1693) Pastoral Landscape Signed indistinctly lower centre left Oil on panel, 48.3X65 cm Provenance: Amsterdam, Glerum, 9 November 1998, lot 44 Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 14 May 2002, lot 81 (as Hendrik Mommers) Bibliography: https://rkd.nl/imageslite/546676 Hendrik Mommers was a pupil of Berchem and, like the latter, active in Rome where he is documented between 1644 and 1646. He painted mainly pastoral and market scenes, his backgrounds are often characterised by ruins of ancient buildings or the Roman countryside. In addition to the subject matter, the style of the painter also refers to the drafting and typology of the figures and the manner of drapery. In our case, his Nordic training is quite evident in the way he outlines the landscape and the accuracy in painting the still life pieces. The work is accompanied by a critical file by Raffaella Colace. Reference bibliography: L. Salerno, Pittori di Paesaggio del Seicento a Roma, III, s.l. 1977-1980, p. 1058 L. J. Bo, G.S.
