Hendrik Verschuring (1627-1690). Men, women and children with horses and dogs at the entrance to a town, a sculpture of the abduction of a Sabine woman. Black stone, brush and grey wash, framing strokes in pen and brown ink. Watermark, cross and escutcheon. Signed and dated "H. Verschuring. Fr. 1660". 48.5 x 39.2 cm. Provenance: J.Fred Bianchi Collection. With Paul Prouté, Paris, 1967, no.16. With Bernard Houthakker, Amsterdam, 1968, p.64. Anonymous sale, Paris, Christie's, 21 November 2007, lot 55. Verschuring stayed in Italy from 1646 to 1654, but continued to paint Italian subjects on his return to Holland. his return to Holland. To be compared with an Italian landscape with horsemen in front of a fountain dated 1680 (Bernard Houthakker sale, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 17 November 1975, lot 115).
