Our painting is a reproduction of the right-hand side of the painting by Veronese in 1563, now in the Louvre. It is the first copy, painted in 1856 by Fantin - Latour.
Fantin-Latour copied various great masters for whom he had admiration, in particular Veronese, Giorgione, Titian and Rubens.
He made several copies of the Marriage at Cana between 1856 and 1870. Most were commissions. The 1857 copy was painted for the collector Beecher - Srtowe. In 1859, Fantin - Latour painted a small canvas for Mr Pina, from Mexico. The 1861 copy was for Sir F. Seymour Haden, and the 1865 copy for Mr Dilberoglou. The 1867 copy, for Monsieur Homer, is now in the Ulster Museum (Ireland).
Unframed.
