Henri Joseph HARPIGNIES (1819-1916) "Un torrent dans le Var", oil on canvas signed lower left Size 53 x 93 cm This painting is a second, smaller version (about half the size) of the salon painting that Harpignies presented in 1888 under the title "Un torrent dans le Var". This painting was bought by the State and sent to the Musée du Luxembourg, which then transferred it to the Musée du Louvre. The painting was then transferred to the Musée d'art et d'histoire d'Auxerre in exchange for the transfer of the Dame d'Auxerre to the Louvre. Harpignies produced several versions of this work, no doubt at the request of enthusiasts. The artist also produced a watercolour on the same theme, which was sold in London by Abbott & Holder.
