Lot no. 1726
Henri Manguin (1874 Paris - 1949 Saint-Tropez) Still life with teapot, cup and fruit Mature late work by the Fauvist from 1949, which testifies to the artist's unbroken artistic freshness. Manguin studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, as did Henri Matisse and Charles Camoin, with whom he became close friends. The exhibitions dedicated to Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh in 1901 led him to exploit the powers of pure colour. In 1902, Manguin had his first exhibitions at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne. In the spring of 1905, the burgeoning Fauvism was already visible at the Salon des Indépendants, even before the legendary exhibition at the Salon d'Automne in 1905, which usually marks the birth of the concept of style. At the Indépendants, Manguin exhibited alongside Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, Othon Friesz, Raoul Dufy, Kees van Dongen, André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Charles Camoin and Jean Metzinger. Like Derain, Matisse, Marquet and Van Dongen, Manguin was also one of the painters exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne in 1905. The following year, the famous Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard acquired 142 paintings by the artist as well as pastels and drawings. In 1910, Manguin had his first solo exhibition at the renowned Galerie Druet in Paris. Manguin was also represented with several works at the "International Exhibition of Modern Art" ("Amory Show") in New York in 1913. From 1920, Manguin exhibited at the Galerie Marcel Bernheim in Paris. In 1940, some of Manguin's works were exhibited at the Venice Biennale. During the Second World War, the artist worked in Paris, Saint-Tropez and Avignon. In 1949, Manguin left Paris to settle in Saint-Tropez, where he died soon afterwards, in September of the same year. Oil/painting cardboard. Signed lower right; 27 cm x 35 cm. Frame. Lucille Manguin dates the painting to 1949. Enclosed: Expertise on photograph overleaf by Lucille Manguin (daughter of the artist), Marnes, 05.05.1982 (in French). This dates the painting to the last year of his life, 1949. OiI on cardboard.
