"Vivid tones, frank greenery, violent seas, vast horizons, air and clarity [...] This is an art of singing light of sincere impressionism". (Anonymous, April 1907).
At the end of the 19th century, Brittany, a land untouched by contemporary life, attracted a number of landscape painters in search of poetry, authenticity and the picturesque. Henry Moret, who had been living in Lorient since the 1870s, made the Breton coast - and more particularly the Finistère coast and the Ponant islands, including Ushant - his favourite subject. He witnessed the blossoming of synthesism, whose distinctive framing and broad flat tints he used, as well as the development of other movements such as Impressionism, whose poetic universe was to affect him more deeply. By blending these opposing movements, he deepened his art of the landscape.
Ouessant, 1900 reflects his great sensitivity and his keen observation of nature. By using a clear, bold palette, capturing the spray, the interplay of light and shadow on the granite cliffs, depicting the shimmer and movement of the ocean through the use of deep blues contrasting with the white of the foam, and introducing atmospheric effects, he gave this work a truly poetic quality, specific to the Breton coast.
