Provenienz Abels Gemälde-Galerie, Köln (mit rückseitigem Rahmenetikett); Privatbesitz Rheinland (seit 1961) Geboren 1856 in Cherbourg, erfährt Henry Moret seine künstlerische Ausbildung an der Pariser École des Beaux-Arts und der Académie Julian. 1888 zieht es den jungen Maler nach Pont-Aven, wo sich um Paul Gauguin eine Reihe von Malern auf die Suche nach der ursprünglichen Landschaft der Bretagne gemacht hat. Als einer der ersten Künstler wird er ansässig in Le Pouldu, das bald wichtiges Zentrum der Pont-Aven Künstler werden sollte. Die Begegnung mit Paul Gauguin prägt die künstlerische Entwicklung des jungen Moret in diesen Jahren nachdrücklich. Nachdem dieser Pont-Aven verlassen hat, gelangt Moret im Laufe der 1890er Jahre zu jener farbstarken Malerei, deren kurzem, schmalem Pinselstrich ein nunmehr unverkennbar impressionistisches Moment innewohnt. Beinahe logisch erscheint die Verbindung zu dem erfolgreichen Galeristen Paul Durand-Ruel, der Henry Morets Werk ab 1895 nicht nur in Paris bekannt macht, sondern auch in New York, wo seine Malerei auf enormes Interesse stößt. Wie kaum einem Maler gelingt Moret die Verknüpfung von impressionistischem Landschaftsverständnis und dem Synthetismus Paul Gauguins. Unser großformatiges Gemälde ist ein seltenes frühes Zeugnis für sein herausragendes Talent, das Wesen der ursprünglichen Natur der bretonischen Landschaft auf die Leinwand zu bannen. Eindrucksvoll ist nicht nur Morets Umgang mit Licht, sondern auch seine Darstellung von Wettereffekten, die er mit leuchtenden Farben dramatisch zu inszenieren weiß. In 1888 the young painter was drawn to Pont-Aven, where a number of painters gathered around Paul Gauguin had set out in search of Brittany's unspoilt landscape. He was one of the first artists to settle in Le Pouldu, which soon became an important centre of the Pont-Aven artists. His encounter with Paul Gauguin powerfully shaped the artistic development of the young Moret during those years. Over the course of the 1890s, after Gauguin had left Pont-Aven, Moret arrived at the boldly colourful painting whose short and narrow brushstrokes now contained an unmistakably Impressionist aspect. It seems almost like a logical necessity that he then became connected with the successful gallerist Paul Durand-Ruel, who publicised Henry Moret's work from 1895 onwards - not just in Paris, but also in New York, where his painting met with enormous interest. There is scarcely another painter who linked an Impressionist understanding of the landscape with the Synthetism of Paul Gauguin as successfully as Moret. Our large-format painting is a rare early document of his outstanding talent for capturing on canvas the essence of the pristine nature of Brittany's landscape. Not just Moret's handling of light, but also his depiction of weather effects, are striking and he knew how to use luminous colours to dramatically present them.
