Lot no. 1437
Outstanding, dated Frankfurt hall cupboard, so-called column cupboard. Walnut burl, veneered and carved in relief. Straight, highly rectangular, architecturally structured body on a wide plinth and large, moulded feet. Two doors with moulded coffered panels flanked by wide pilasters with Corinthian capitals. In the concave front corners, sturdy, slightly conical, set full columns as supports for a wide, multi-partitioned and slightly projecting moulded cornice. Cartouche-shaped key escutcheon in light relief. Notched carving dated 1659. H. 232 cm. 224 cm x 87.5 cm.
Until well into the 18th century, the so-called "cabinet according to architecture" was demanded as a masterpiece. Cabinets of this type placed particularly high demands on the technical skills of a journeyman and were extremely expensive, both in terms of the materials used and the labour required, which took around a year.
