HERBARIUM OF PLANTS FROM THE ROYAL GARDEN IN PARIS This herbarium was written in 1760; it is a very important work carried out by one of the gardeners of the Jardin du Roy in Paris, of which Buffon was the Director at the time. The Jardin du Roy in Paris should not be confused with the Jardin du Roy in the Palace of Versailles, which was much more important at the time. This collection consists of 192 handwritten leaves, describing the plants with their Latin and French names, with the plants described facing each other on the back of the previous leaf, fixed to each page by elegant glued bookmarks. The author of this monumental work has numbered each leaf, with one small error: there is no leaf 122, but the numbering runs from f. 121 to f. 123, with no gaps. In addition, on the back of the title leaf, the author indicates a classification and specifies that at the end of the collection there will be a "catalogue of all the plants"; however, this catalogue does not appear and the collection has not been completed. For some unknown reason, the author was unable to complete his work. The collection is preserved in a contemporary hard vellum binding.
