Lot no. 120
(HERB). Flora Einsiedelnesis. s.l., 1877. In-folio, bound in green half-maroquin with corners, spine decorated with gilt fillets with red morocco title page (Binding of the period). Remarkable herbarium from the region of Einsiedeln, in the canton of Schwyz, consisting of 150 leaves with one or more specimens per leaf, each with identification, place and date of collection on a label. A handwritten notebook by the author with a list of plants by leaf and another with a list of plants by location are included. The author of this herbarium could be Peter Joseph Eggler in Wollerau (canton of Schwyz), according to two articles, copies of which are enclosed. The vast peat bogs of Einsiedeln are in fact a botanical station of the highest interest, displaying all the characteristics of the Arctic tundras. Here are the details given in the Dictionnaire géographique de la Suisse (1902): "On the edges of the peat bog, the stunted and twisted trunks of the spruce can be seen... In the bog itself, there are numerous clumps of mountain pine (Pinus uliginosa), and... various small shrubs... characteristic of Arctic landscapes, including Golden Willow, Creeping Willow (Salix auripa and repens) and Blue Honeysuckle (Lonieera cœrulea). Tiny corollas of andromeda and cranberry (Vaeeinium oxyeoeeos) and tufts of sundew, always covered in beads of dew, bloom on the shifting cushions of green or reddish sphagnum moss, while the less submerged areas are covered with the cottony heads of cottongrass accompanying the spikes of sedge and the upright stems of rushes. In ditches full of water... you can collect the rare Utrieularia minor and Sarganium natans. Here and there you can also collect Viola palustris, Lysimachia thyrsiflora, Cosmarum palustre, Swertia perennis, Primula farinosa, Saxifraga Hirculus... Scheuzeria palustris, Hieroehloa odorata... Unfortunately for botanists, the over-exploitation of peat bogs, their drying out and the invasion of crops have led and will continue to lead to the disappearance of the rarest and most interesting species of Einsiedeln's flora". A rare and precious herbarium.
