Lot no. 1626
Hermann Corrodi (1844 Frascati - 1905 Rome) Evening mood with fishermen on the shore of the Gulf of Naples near Sorrento Subtly capturing the Mediterranean light mood, this landscape impression is given an exciting composition by the elongated vertical format. Corrodi was trained by Alexandre Calame, his father Salomon and at the Accademia San Luca in Rome. The year 1872 was a turning point, when he travelled to Paris and experienced his breakthrough. The English royal family acquired Corrodi's landscapes, followed by other royal families and the German aristocracy, who commissioned him. Corrodi lived in Germany during the summer months and in Rome in winter, where he also taught at the Accademia di San Luca. His extensive travels through Italy, the Mediterranean countries, the Near and Far East were reflected in his poetic landscapes, which are often characterised by great freedom of detail and composition and reflect a more modern conception of the landscape. Oil on canvas; signed l. and r.; 67 cm x 39 cm. Probably original frame. Oil on canvas. Signed. Probably original frame.
