On the shore, at sunset
Signed H Corrodi, Roma 79 lower left
Oil on canvas, 89X64 cm
Son of art, his father Salomon was in fact a well-known Swiss landscape painter, Hermann Corrodi received a solid and cosmopolitan education: he studied at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, then in Paris and London, where he assimilated the international taste for landscape painting and the representation of natural light. From his earliest works, Corrodi showed a deep interest in the atmospheric dimension of the landscape, understood not as mere scenery, but as emotional and narrative space. In the painting, the light of the setting sun envelops the landscape in a golden, motionless aura. Fishermen, women and children are small presences that do not dominate the scene, but inhabit it silently, becoming part of the natural balance. Corrodi thus depicts a suspended everyday life, in which the serenity of human gestures merges with the vastness of the sky and water. The light of sunset, a recurring theme in his work, is not just a pictorial device, but a poetic symbol: it is the light that transforms, that unites the real and the dreamed, that marks the boundary between day and memory. From a technical point of view, Corrodi is distinguished by a smooth and accurate brushstroke, a skilful use of warm tones and a balanced composition built with broad perspectives and soft lines. His works were successfully exhibited in London, Paris and Rome, and today are held in museums and private collections in Europe and the USA.
