Lot no. 126
HERMES TRISMEGISTUS. Two books of Mercure Trismegiste Hermes, one of the power and sapience of God, the other of the will of God. Avecq' un dialogue de Loys Lazarel, intitulé Le Bassin d'Hermès. All translated from Greek into French by Gabriel du Préau. Paris, Étienne Groulleau, 1557. In-8, green morocco, gilt fleuron at centre of covers, ribbed spine, inner lace, gilt edges over marbling, modern box (Chambolle-Duru). First vernacular translation based on the Greek original of the Hermetic corpus.
Gabriel Dupréau (1511-1588), from Marcoussis, had published a first French translation of this hermetic collection in 1549, based on the Latin version given by Marsilio Ficino in 1463 (printed by Henri Estienne in 1505). This second French translation was based on the Greek text compiled by Ange Vergèce and brought to light by Guillaume Morel and Adrien Turnèbe in 1554. Both are extremely rare.
This volume brings together the two main collections of the Hermetic corpus, the Pimandre and the Asclepios, to which the publisher has appended the Hermetic extracts of Stobée and the Basin of Hermes by Ludovico Lazzarelli, which already appeared in the 1549 edition. It was printed with great care by Étienne Groulleau, whose woodcut mark adorns the title.
A very fine copy compiled by Chambolle-Duru.
Without the last blank leaf X8. Spine very slightly faded.
Caillet, n°5095.
