Lot no. 292
HÉRODOTE. Histoire, traduite du grec, avec des remarques historiques & critiques, un Essai sur la chronologie d'Hérodote, & une Table Géographique ; Par M. Larcher. Paris, Musier, Nyon, 1786. 7 volumes in-4, marbled fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, marbled edges (period binding). First edition of one of the best early translations of Herodotus' History, by Pierre-Henri Larcher, who also wrote the notes. This edition begins with a life of Herodotus; it also contains a very interesting index of authors and editions used by Larcher and, above all, an "Essay on the Chronology of Herodotus" containing a general chronology of political and cultural events from the origins of Egypt to around 221. This chronology served as a basis for historical research for many years. Volume I bears the label of the Perisse brothers, printers and booksellers in Lyon, numbered 103/110. Some light browning in certain volumes, a few minor binding defects, but a fine copy nonetheless.
