Lot no. 1670
EXCELLENT FORK SET
Saxon, dated 1686.
Bone engraved with a depiction of the Elector and crossed tools in a laurel wreath beneath a surrounding scale border. With remnants of red colour. Handle with pierced and screwed lid, containing six corresponding miniature forks with engraved handles. Brass grip ferrule. Fork with two tines.
L 29 cm.
Minor chips to the edges.
An almost identical fork set, also dated 1686, comes from the A. Jubinal. The object is illustrated in: J. Best. Magasin pittoresque. Paris, unknown date, p. 104. It remains questionable whether the object cited is perhaps the cutlery set shown here.
