HESS (Peter von). Album of Greek Heroism, or The Deliverance of Greece. Munich, Heinrich Kohler, s.d. [ca. 1835]. Large folio, leaves, red percaline slipcase titled in English and framed in gilt. First edition and first print run of this magnificent suite of historical paintings on the Greek War of Independence lithographed after Peter von Hess.
It includes 2 gilt lithographed leaves for the title (in English) and the dedication to Otto I of Greece, a title-frontispiece and 39 very beautiful plates on the Greek War of Independence, lithographed in two tones by J. B. Kuhn after the paintings by Peter von Hess, with captions in four languages (German, French, English and Greek), as well as 2 pages of table of plates in four languages.
The Bavarian painter Peter von Hess (1792-1871) followed Otto I, elected King of Greece in 1833, to his new country and painted many historical pictures for him.
Extremely rare, this album is missing from Atabey, Blackmer and Droulia.
A copy of the English edition, distributed in London by S.K. Mainbernheim, preserved in its extremely rare publisher's slipcase titled on the first cover: The Deliverance of Greece.
Plate 1 (Rigas animating the Greeks) comes from another copy; it has shorter margins. Freckling and spotting; slipcase carefully restored.
