In-8 of [136] ff. signed a-c8 d4 e-r8 s4, wooden boards covered with brocaded red silk, muted ribbed spine, gilt edges, clasp with worked brass clasps (Antique binding). Precious and very rare Gothic Book of Hours for the use of Toul, printed around 1502 for Simon Vostre, whose name and typographical mark appear on the title. Magnificent woodcut illustration featuring nineteen full-page figures: the anatomical man (f. a2), the torture of Saint John the Evangelist (f. a8), the kiss of Judas (f. b4), the tree of Jesse (f. d4), the Annunciation (f. e1), Psalm LXX (f. e7), the Nativity (f. f5), the announcement to the shepherds (f. g1), the Magi (f. g4), the Presentation in the Temple (f. g7), the Massacre of the Innocents (f. h2), the Death of the Virgin (f. h6), the Carrying of the Cross (f. i2), Pentecost (f. i5), King David and Uriah the Hittite (f. i7), Uriah's death at the battle of Rabba (f. i8), the leper at the banquet (f. l7), the Last Judgment (f. l8) and the Holy Trinity (f. p1). In addition, twenty-five small-format vignettes and portraits of saints adorn the saints' suffrages. All pages are framed by richly decorated borders with a variety of subjects: biblical episodes, games and occupations of the people, hunting and leisure activities of the nobility, grotesques and arabesques, as well as an impressive dance of the dead running over fifty pages (ff. l8-p1). The orations printed at the end of the volume are in French. This book of hours for use in Toul is absolutely rare. Brigitte Moreau cites only two copies, both in the United States, in the university libraries of Princeton and Iowa City (incomplete). Printed on vellum, with initials and capitals illuminated in red, blue and gold. The figure of the carrying of the cross has been enhanced with pleasant coloring (f. i2). Provenance: Marie de Regnier, with 16th-century manuscript bookplate at the end of the text (f. s4); 16th-century manuscript quatrain and motto surrounded by symbols of fidelity (ff. b4 and d4). Some leaves a little handled or soiled; Simon Vostre's shield scratched on the title; minor repairs in the margins of some leaves; cut not missing on f. s1.
