Hours of the Middle Ages. Paris, Gruel-Engelmann, 1887. In-12, frontispiece, 192 p., 6 p. for notes and family souvenirs (blank). All the pages of this work have been engraved in chromolithography on strong paper and mounted on tabs. Signed Jansenist binding in olive morocco, ribbed spine, gilt and anti-marked edges, brass and silver clasps with baroque decoration and cherubs' faces, dark blue silk lining with gilt motifs in the publishers' names, interior lace (Gruel). Delightful book of hours inspired by medieval manuscripts, text engraved in black, red and blue, with typographical ornaments, lettering, line ends, and coloured frames with gilded highlights, different on each page, depicting flowers of all kinds, acanthus leaves, vegetal decorations, angels, birds and other animals, faces in medallions, scenes of life, fantastic bestiary, etc. A superb copy in a fine binding signed by Gruel. Two missals are enclosed.
