Lot no. 27
HIPPOCRATE. Liber secundus de morbis vulgaribus. Basel, Jakob Kündig for the widow of Michaël Isingrin, 1560. In-8, limp vellum, rich gilt decoration of interlacing foliage and scrolls on a rippled background surrounding a central medallion with semé de pointillés, smooth spine decorated with the same semé, gilt and chased edges (contemporary binding). First edition given by Anuce Foës of the second book of Hippocrates' Epidemics, elegantly printed in Latin and Greek, with Galen's commentary, by the Basel typographer Jakob Kündig (known as Jacobus Parcus in Latin).
This was the first work published by Anuce Foës (1528-1595), a physician and humanist from Metz who specialised in the works of Hippocrates. It was dedicated to Charles III, Duke of Lorraine, and earned the author his appointment as stipendiary physician to the city of Metz, where he was responsible for providing free care to the poor and ensuring the city's health. In this work," observes R. Bolzinger, "Foës reveals not only his immense knowledge, but also his deep sensitivity to the distress of the most destitute patients and his constant desire to make a ray of hope shine in their eyes".
A very fine copy in a richly decorated contemporary vellum binding with delicately chiselled edges.
Angular staining on one half of the volume and at the head of a few leaves; minor paper repairs to the first three leaves without affecting the print; tear not missing from the last blank leaf; binding missing.
