HOBBES (Thomas). Philosophical Elements of the Good Citizen. Political treatise, in which the foundations of civil society are discovered. Paris, Veuve Théodore Péringué & Étienne Maucroy, 1651. In-8, green morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate smooth spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Binding of the late eighteenth century). Second edition of the French translation of the treatise De cive, by Samuel Sorbière, published like the first in 1649. "Better printed than the first and of a slightly larger format" according to Brunet, this edition has the advantage of containing after the text an Advertissement du traducteur (Translator's commentary) added after the publication of this work. It is decorated with an intaglio engraved title-frontispiece. The copy comes from the second printing, sold under a new title, two years younger, to the address of its real Parisian publishers. A choice copy in a green morocco binding attributable to Derome, produced on behalf of the Parisian bookseller Guillaume-Luc Bailly, with the price code zrf - Bop on the last endpaper.
