HOBHOUSE (John Cam). A Journey through Albania, and other provinces of Turkey in Europe and Asia, to Constantinople, during the years 1809 and 1810. London, James Cawthorn, 1813. First edition of this beautiful work illustrated with 17 delicately coloured aquatint plates of views and costumes (7 of which are double-page plates), a black frontispiece, 2 folding maps, a plan, 2 facsimiles of letters and 2 music plates. This famous account of the great tour Hobhouse (1786-1869) undertook with his friend Lord Byron in 1809-1810 is an important source for this period in the life of the Romantic poet. On his return, Hobhouse embarked on a long political career and remained close to Byron, whom he accompanied on his trip to Italy and to whom he supplied notes for the fourth canto of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. From the William Selby Church library, with bookplate. The copy includes only one folding map: the map of Albania is missing. Hinges cracked, discharge of the frontispiece on the title, some foxing. Atabey, n°584 - Blackmer, n°821 - Abbey, Travel, n°202.
