[CAVAFY (Constantine P.) London,, Alecto,, 1967.. Fourteen Poems by C.P. Cavafy. In-folio (46.7 x 33.3 cm), bradel magenta cloth, smooth spine, publisher's black slipcase (publisher's binding). Edition with 12 original etchings by David Hockney, stamped on the spine, accompanying poems by Constantin P. Cavafy, translated from Greek by Nikos Stangos and Stephen Spender. "Contained some of the artist's most accomplished line drawings to that date" (Riggs). A great admirer of Cavafy's poetry, Hockney drew inspiration from it for several of his works. The series of prints Illustrations for Fourteen Poems from C.P. Cavafy remains the most important and best known. Initially intending to illustrate a large number of Cavafy's poems, Hockney eventually concentrated on those dealing with homosexuality, a major theme for both painter and poet. Limited to 670 numbered copies, this is one of 250 copies of the B edition (no. 271) signed by the artist. A very fresh copy, spine and slipcase soiled and slightly rubbed, some serpents missing.
