Lot no. 1042
Hohlwein, Ludwig Turf. Twelve racing pictures. 1909. 12 colour lithographs on wove paper. Loose in original linen portfolio with lithographed title. Folio, prints 37.5 x 38 cm (49.5 x 50.5 cm). The prints all signed, with the artist's signature in the stone and signed and numbered in the imprint. - Graphics with occasional slight handling/crease marks in the margins, some darkened in places and with a small tear, some with pale stains, one sheet slightly unfresh, good overall. The portfolio with water stains and small (colour) stains, linen somewhat rubbed in corners, with a nick at bottom centre, slightly browned inside and with small pale brown stains in places, cover paper curved in places, overall still good. Excellent, colour-fresh impressions throughout, each with wide margins. The complete portfolio shows a dramatic sequence of an equestrian event that impressively demonstrates both Hohlwein's passion for the clever, graceful animals and his great talent for portraying them. Hohlwein himself was a passionate hunter and rider. In this series, he depicts all aspects and processes of a day at the racecourse in an impressive way: the arrival of the spectators in the carriage, the riders in front of the grandstand, the presentation of the horses, the riders during the tense race, the drama of a fall and the victorious jockey. "The Turf series shows with extreme clarity the clear influence of English models, especially that of William Nicholson, one of the two 'Beggarstaff Brothers'" (Hohlwein, p. 133). - Published by Kunst- & Verlagsanstalt Graphia, Munich. - Rare. Twelve colour lithographs on wove paper. Loose in original linen wing folder with lithographed title.
