Lot no. 73
HOMER. Nausikaa. Translation by Leconte de Lisle. Paris, L'Édition d'art, H. Piazza et Cie, 1899. In-4, untrimmed, illustrated publisher's boards. Edition of the sixth canto of the Odyssey decorated with 52 colour compositions by Gaston de Latenay, including 23 full-page and 2 on the cover, wood-engraved by Ruckert and delicately stencilled. Edition of 400 copies, this one unnumbered on vellum, offered to Monsieur Henry Masson. Splendid illustration, perhaps the most emblematic of Symbolism: "The immobility and static archelogical style of the poetry are matched by the pale, cool, lyrical colouring and formalized linear style of the illustrations - landscapes with classical figures rhythmically disposed" (The Turn of the Century, n°70). An illustrated subscription leaflet is enclosed. Bound in rubbed and browned boards. Carteret Illustrés, IV, p. 235.
