Lot no. 102
HORACE. Opera cum quibusdam annotationibus, imaginibusque pulcherrimis. Strasbourg, Johann Reinhard Grüninger, 1498. In-folio, fawn-coloured basane, spine decorated, smooth edges (17th century binding). First illustrated edition of Horace's works, following on from Grüninger's Terence of 1496 and Virgil of 1502. This edition was compiled by the poet Jakob Locher (1471-1528), who used manuscripts recently discovered in Germany for the first time. As such, Brunet considers that it "can be placed among the editions princeps, as it was not based on printed texts, but on manuscripts". Only the title is in Gothic lettering, while the text is in Romanesque lettering in three columns, two of which are in small type containing commentaries by Pomponius Porphyrionus, Acron d'Hélène, Cristoforo Landino and Antonio Mancinelli. This precious volume is illustrated with 168 superb woodcuts by the famous Master of the Terence of 1496, also known as the Master of the Grüninger workshop. A copy entirely rubricated in red, with some engravings formerly highlighted in yellow. It contains 16th century marginal and interlinear annotations, which are particularly abundant in the Art poétique. From the library of L.-A. Barbet, with his signature at the top of the title, and René Johannet, with a handwritten bookplate on the verso. Incomplete of 2 introductory ff., the blank leaf LL8 and 6 ff. of index (ff. [3-4], [208-214]). Title doubled and unbound, small hole in first three leaves, numerous worm holes in first few leaves and some dampstaining, worm work at bottom of volume, scratching to figure on f. 194v°, marginal repairs to last six leaves (with text missing from last leaf only). Worn binding. ISTC ih00461000 - HC 8898* - Goff H461 - CIBN H-285 - Pr 485 - BMC, I, 112 - GW 13468.
