Lot no. 31
HORAPOLLON. De hieroglyphicis notis. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1530. Small in-8 of [28]-4 ff, garnet morocco, gilt roulette, ornate spine, double fillet inside with fleurons at the corners, gilt edges (19th century binding). Very rare second edition of Horapollon's Hieroglyphics in Bernardino Trebazio's Latin translation, elegantly printed by Robert Estienne after the first edition published by Froben in Basel in 1518. The editio princeps, in Greek, is Aldine and dates from 1505. This work, attributed to the Alexandrian philosopher Horapollon of the Nile, is the only treatise on ancient hieroglyphics to have survived in its entirety. Preserved by the Byzantines, it remained unknown in the West throughout the Middle Ages. From the library of the Theological Institute of Connecticut, with dry stamp. Binding slightly worn, spine rebacked, small tear not missing from last leaf. Renouard, 34 :13 - Schreiber, n°42 - Moreau, III, n°2148.
