HORNEMANN (Friedrich Konrad). Voyage dans l'Afrique septentrionale, depuis le Caire jusqu'à Mourzouk, capitale du royaume de Fezzan. Paris, Dentu, year XI - 1803. 2 volumes in-8, half-brown basane with corners, smooth threaded spine, daffodil edges (Binding of the period). The best French edition of this much sought-after report, with notes and additions by Louis Langlès. It includes a Berber vocabulary, a report on the oases and two large fold-out maps that were not included in the 1802 edition.
Having left Cairo, Hornemann (1772-1801) travelled in disguise with the caravans on their way to Mecca and then to Fezzan. This report is the fruit of correspondence between the German explorer and the African Association in London during his journey to the source of the Niger.
From the Henri Tronchin library in Bessinge, with bookplate.
