HORNEMANN (Friedrich Konrad). Travels in the interior of Africa, during the years 1797, 1798. Paris, André, 1802. In-8, marbled basane, smooth spine decorated (Period binding). First French translation, based on the English by François Soulès. It precedes by a year the version given by Langlès partly based on the German original.
Friedrich Konrad Hornemann (1772-1801), a native of Hildesheim who had settled in Egypt in February 1797, joined a caravan returning from the hajj to North Africa on 5 September 1798, posing as a young Muslim, which enabled him to reach the oases of Siwa, Aujilla and Mourzouq. He lived there until June 1799, when he returned to Tripoli, from where he sent an account of his adventures to London.
