After studying graphic design at the BGS Linz, he worked as a graphic designer in Vienna, partly as an employee and partly as a freelancer. From 1966 to 1969, he was art director at Henkel Austria. In 1969, Thom founded a studio for graphics and design in Vienna. At the same time, fine art gained importance. In 1980, Thom had his first solo exhibition of watercolours, entitled "Landschaften" (Landscapes) at the Kleine Galerie in Vienna. This was followed by around 40 solo exhibitions. From 1994, he taught watercolour painting for ten years at the Volkshochschule 1090 in Vienna. In 2002, he created the set design for "Salome" at the Pfalztheater in Kaiserslautern. Further projects for Viennese theatres followed, as did "The Magic Flute" for the opera house in Taipei, Taiwan, as a contribution to the Mozart Year. Thom is a member of the IG Bildende Kunst (Arts and Design Association).
