HUGHES (Thomas Smart). Travels in Sicily, Greece and Albania. London, J. Mawman, 1820. 2 volumes in-4, half calf with corners, spine decorated with gilt fillets, combed edges (English binding of the period). First edition of this account of the grand tour of Spain, Italy, Sicily, Greece and Albania undertaken by the Anglican cleric Thomas Smart Hughes (1786-1847) in 1813 and 1814. The work was translated into French and German the following year and republished in 1830.
The illustrations, by the architect Charles Robert Cockerell, include 15 maps and plates (2 of which are folded) engraved on metal or in aquatint and a few wood-engraved figures in the text.
Armorial bookplate with motto: E fructu arbor cognoscitur.
Hinges and headpieces restored, corners worn.
