Lot no. 90
HUGNET (Georges). Autograph correspondence to Robert Altmann. L'Herbière (Île de Ré), 1964-1972. In-4, plum half-maroquin, plexiglas cover, smooth spine, natural edges (D.-H. Mercher). Beautiful and interesting autograph correspondence by Georges Hugnet enriched with original drawings.
This set comprises 18 autograph letters and 5 postcards from Georges Hugnet (1906-1974), a "jack-of-all-trades surrealist", addressed to his patron and friend, the collector Robert Altmann (1915-2017), enriched with 8 original drawings in Indian ink and colour, a pastel drawing and an original lithograph. The letters were sent from the Île de Ré, where the artist stayed during his holidays at his house, L'Herbière.
All the correspondence (letters, cards and drawings) is arranged in chronological order and fixed to the blank pages of an album (33 x 26 cm), using a thin strip of 4 mm adhesive tape on the left-hand side, so that the letters and postcards can be read on both sides by turning them over.
The album cover is illustrated with an original composition by Hugnet in coloured ink, monogrammed GH and dated 71, mounted under a laminated window.
A sumptuous and rare set, very elegantly presented.
