Genuine first edition published in Brussels on 30 or 31 March 1862; two formats were published, in-12 and in-8. Both were printed a few days before the original French edition by Pagnerre in Paris. "In this Belgian edition there are a certain number of sentences which, having appeared dangerous for France, were modified in the French edition" (Vicaire IV, 324). En français dans le texte, 275; Les Misérables, 1862-1962, Catalogue de l'exposition à la Maison de Victor Hugo, 1962, nos 292 à 323: "The Belgian edition, considered by Hugo to be the "princeps" edition, and of which he meticulously corrected all the proofs, published Part I, "Fantine", on 30-31 March 1862. The Paris edition did not come out until 3 April.
