First edition of this "capital and universally esteemed work" (Carteret). "The Belgian edition, rarer than the Paris edition, appeared a few days before the latter" (Clouzot). This is the edition that Hugo considered to be the princeps, and of which he meticulously corrected all the proofs. A copy of the first edition without any mention of the edition.
