HUGO (Victor). Les Misérables. Brussels, A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie, 1862. 10 volumes in-8, red half calf, spine decorated with gilt and cold filets, speckled edges (period binding). First edition of this "capital and universally esteemed work" (Carteret).
"The Belgian edition, rarer than the Paris edition, appeared a few days before the latter" (Clouzot). This is the edition that Hugo considered to be the princeps, and of which he meticulously corrected all the proofs.
