The 5 publisher's announcement leaves at the end of the book give the detailed composition of the famous guide: "written by the main French literati and scholars", published in 1867 on the occasion of the Paris Universal Exhibition. Bound in the book are 3 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED BY VICTOR HUGO (2 with initials). 1. While in exile in Guernsey: Letter dated 20th April 1869 from Hauteville House and addressed to Emile Bellier, Reunion Island, in care of M. Aug. Vacquerie. 1 page in-8. - Your letter, dear poet, has touched my heart. You knew and loved a noble woman; she was a great soul. She smiled at your beautiful future as a poet. Today you mourn her with me. You will remain on this earth long after I am gone. ..... I pay my respects to your charming wife and shake your hand. V.H.". 2. Still in exile: Letter dated 19 September at Hauteville House and very probably addressed to the same person. 2 leaves in-12 on pink paper. - Your book has done more than move me, it has moved me.... Today you are the poet, tomorrow you will be the writer... I feel in you like a son of my thoughts. Come and see me... Victor Hugo". 3. Letter dated 27 April (1871?) from Paris. Probably addressed to the same person and about his son Charles who died suddenly in March 1871. 1 page in-8. - I read your letter, I read and reread your beautiful verses. My heart responds to yours. He who was a son to me was almost a brother to you. I too will soon be making my exit, I am turning towards a better life. Dear sweet poet, thank you..... Thank you. V. H. ". These 3 letters have remained unpublished. Good condition, the copy has wide margins.
