HULIN COMMANDING THE GRENADIERS OF THE CONSULS' GUARD. Large travel writing case for General Pierre Hulin, used as commander of the grenadiers of the Consuls' Guard. In walnut, with reinforced corners, folding handles and brass tab. The lid is decorated with a brass plaque engraved "P.HULIN Chef de Brigade commandant les grenadiers". Opened, it features a green leather-covered writing case decorated with Greek friezes and palmettes. The lower part, sheathed in green morocco, opens to reveal a travel kit: - Coffee pot, saucers and white porcelain pots. - A tray with a chisel, an ear pick, an ivory (elephantidae spp.) mechanical pencil and an ivory (elephantidae spp.) toothbrush. - A mirror (broken). - A central silvered metal basin containing two Paris porcelain coffee cups with gold filet decoration, two silvered stoppered flasks, two covered silvered metal lidded pots, two silvered stoppered glass flasks, one glass. - A compartment on the left side with an hourglass inkwell, an ivory razor (elephantidae spp.) and a sharpener. Height 17 cm; Length: 41 cm; Width: 31 cm. Total gross weight including ivory: 69 g Average condition (cracks and chips to the box, some parts missing). Consulate period (circa 1802-1803). Biography : Pierre Augustin, Count Hulin (1758-1841). Sergeant in the Guards-Suisses (1785), he led the rioters when the Bastille was taken (14 July 1789), then served in Italy (1795-1800). General (1803), he chaired the military commission that condemned the Duc d'Enghien to death (1804). He was Governor of Paris from 1807 to 1814 and was seriously wounded during General Malet's conspiracy (1812), earning the nickname "Bouffe la balle" ("Eat the bullet"). History Hulin was a brigade commander from around 1796-1798. He served with this brigade in Italy (where he commanded the town of Livorno) and in Egypt. However, the attribution on the box refers to his assignment as brigade commander (with the rank of colonel in the line), commanding the foot grenadiers of the Consuls' Guard, a post he held from 15 September 1802 to 29 August 1803, when he was appointed brigadier general. If the animal is to be exported from the European Union, a CITES re-export permit will be required, at the buyer's expense.
